0.5.0b Incident Report Downtime On June 4th at 10:45 NZT we deployed a hotfix patch that resulted in many users being disconnected from the online realm. There was also degraded server performance for users not affected by the disconnection. The disruption was not fully resolved until 11:54 NZT causing many players to be unable to log in during this time. This incident report will go over what happened and what steps we are taking to prevent this occurring in the future. The ops team began investigation into reports at 10:54 NZT. We saw that there was an increased crash rate, but it was unclear at this time how many players were affected. At 11:10 NZT we made the decision to roll back the hot fix. Issues Unfortunately, the rollback did not complete in a timely manner. At 11:24 NZT we discovered that the problem was caused by many servers’ hard disks having filled up with crash dumps which were created by the bad hot fix. Crash dumps are files that allow us to debug the cause of server crashes, but they contain all the memory of the process that crashed making them quite large. In this case, the sheer volume of crash dumps caused by the hotfix also prevented us from reverting the hot fix. Not only were the crash dumps filling up all the empty space on the servers, but the servers performance was incredibly poor due to the number of large crash dumps being simultaneously written which made resolving the problem even slower. It took quite some time for our sysadmins to get this situation under control and get the servers back into a good state, at which point we rolled back to the old version and restored service at 11:54 NZT. During this time, performance on some servers was degraded for other players who were not getting disconnected due to the extra load the crash dump writing was causing. Causes After investigation, we found that the original issue was caused by a data file relating to the passive skill tree being missing in the hotfix. Due to a slight difference in our packaging system between staging and production builds, this file was incorrectly not included in our production hotfix package, and this caused anyone with a radius Jewel that covered the area on the passive tree to which we added new nodes, to crash the server. Improvements There are a few improvements that we will be making in response to this incident. The primary change is preventing crash dumps from being able to fill up the disks of our servers. We have never experienced this type of failure before, and were totally unprepared for it. The second is improving the speed of our rollback system by doing more in advance of deployment to make sure that rolling back can be faster. While this wasn’t the primary cause of the issue, it would have aided in resolving the issue more quickly. We apologise for the disruption caused, and will try to avoid this type of situation in the future.

Improperly stored data inevitably becomes a target for a data breach, EFF’s @legind told @arstechnica. “That’s something they should… take care to protect, even especially because it includes people that weren’t even affiliated with Columbia.”https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2026/06/my-ssn-was-exposed-in-a-breach-at-columbia-a-school-i-have-no-connection-with/

The U.S. has needed a strong comprehensive privacy law for many years, and while state laws passed to fill that gap are imperfect, even the weak ones are stronger than the proposed federal SECURE Data Act, EFF’s Mario Trujillo told StateScoop. https://statescoop.com/house-subcommittee-secure-data-act-preempts-state-privacy-laws-2026/
