@Quasit @Binder I left Germany just a year before the Berlin Wall came down. Just under a decade later, there was the Good Friday Agreement. I really thought the world was becoming a better place. Scooby Doo was right every time. The monsters always turn out to be evil old men.

Politicians are generally scum, but if you've ever mocked them for producing bloated bills, try getting just four people to agree on a policy for a small community theater -- a policy that still has to be debated and voted on by the entire board of directors .Our moderate policy went from a single pithy paragraph to four hefty paragraphs before we could come to agreement

much like the 'paradox of tolerance', the "do not speak ill of the dead" meme describes an edge case around a societal agreement - in this case, that people who die have families who care about them and oughtn't to be tarred with the same brush.except that, like the paradox of tolerance, when you look at these situations with a critical eye, you can see that the exhortation is being used to shut down legitimate criticism of someone who has dedicated significant time and effort towards breaking the societal rules that underlie that agreement.and as such, there is no paradox at all: if you break those rules, then the agreement founded on them does not apply.and I'm fucking glad that rat bastard graham is dead, and I'm looking forward to others of his cohort joining him.
